This year, one of my goals is to become more adventurous with colors when it comes to my wardrobe. A lot of the time I find comfort and ease in neutral colors, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but I also find joy in bright and eye-catching sweaters, dresses, bags and shoes. In fact, I tend to buy more of the latter because they speak to me, but then when it comes to actually getting myself dressed, what do I reach for? You guessed it. My steady neutrals.
I recently, along with the rest of the world, Marie Kondo-ed my closet, and realized I have several articles of clothing, shoes, and even purses (but mostly shoes—I have a weakness) that have yet to see the outside world! These extravagant, loud, and bold pieces that I’ve accumulated over time, I’ve either been too timid to wear, or too lazy to figure out how to wear and style. Well, my goal is for that to no longer be the case!
I was attracted to these pieces and spent money on them because they caught my eye, they sparked something in me, they made me smile, they shone! So, I think it’s quite unfair to myself and my wallet to just let these pieces sit idly in my closet.
Here are a few quick photos my husband took of me in some colorful outfits since the New Year began!
Keep reading for some tips on how to consciously incorporate more colors into your winter wardrobe!
1.Find a statement coat you love
A coat thing is the last thing you throw on before heading out the door, but the first thing people see! If you’re in a rush, tossing on a coat in an unexpected color is a low-effort way to get that extra bit of oomph from your outfit. Have a little time to spend? Try picking a monochromatic color scheme in a cheery color. That’s what I did here with pink and small pops of blue. I’m wearing a pink fur-cuffed coat, a pink pearl headband, a vintage pink bamboo Gucci bag, a floral dress with pink and blue flowers, and I tied it together with blue fringed mules!
2. Let one article of clothing steal the show
Go for bold! A bold sweater, a bold pant, a bold skirt or dress…it doesn’t matter, just pick one! By choosing one article of clothing to showcase, you make the rest of the outfit easier to throw together. There’s no need to figure out what colors complement each other, just add some basics you love and you’re good to go. Want to take it up a notch? Choose something with added visual interest like these red pants that are covered in lace. I let my red lace pants be the focal point of my look by toning it down with a ruffled gray turtleneck, a long taupe coat, nude fringe mules and my favorite Gucci Dionysus bag.
3. Get color-blocking
Color blocking is when you pair together totally different colors to create a statement look. I’ve always thought purples and pinks go together so beautifully with deep greens so in this look I wore my over the knee deep green suede boots, with a lavender sweater and a PVC and leather lavender bag. I toned it all down with a black zippered leather pencil skirt, and a black velvet headband. Color blocking isn’t as scary as it sounds!
